Love and War marks a significant turning point from Rain’s previous releases, which were recorded entirely by Thomas Te Taite and Cathy Elizabeth alone, featuring Te Taite on all instrumentation and digital drums. With those lockdown days behind us, and a new full band line-up at the helm, this will be Rain’s first single to be recorded fully together as a band; from the drum tracking right through to completion. An exciting and special moment of evolution for singer-songwriter Cathy Elizabeth, and a time of real growth and solidification for the band Rain.

Love and War is a raw and heart-felt piece, and the band has done an absolutely stellar job of capturing and conveying the song’s emotion through the development process. Of particular stand-out quality is the guitar work by Israel Burke, beautifully interpreting the anguish through his solos, and bringing the song to a climatic crescendo. Together with Jacob Whittaker, the guitars have become the most notable feature of the track. With Chris Ewers on bass, perfectly complementing the drum skills of Murray James on his fantastic PDP kit, all has been beautifully captured by Te Taite, who relished the opportunity to showcase his engineering skills at the HiViZ Jamz studio.

It was the last wish of Rain’s late band-member Doug Thimblebee for Te Taite to take his acoustic guitar parts for the recording, as sadly he wasn’t well enough to complete the recording process. Thimblebee passed in December of 2022, but not before nominating Whittaker to be his successor on rhythm guitar, and passing on as much knowledge as he could before he left. Thimblebee had been instrumental in bringing the band together, and he made sure that the legacy he left was on track to carry the band forward.

Love and War was pulled from Elizabeth’s existing back-catalogue of songs she had written over the years, and it speaks of love and betrayal, but also of hope and healing, and a way forward after heartbreak. To say “all is fair in love and war” is a form of acceptance; that while people sometimes don’t play by the rules, at the end of the day – shit happens. What’s done is done. But we should always do what is right by ourselves, and don’t stay in a bad situation that is damaging or unhealthy for us.

Love and War will be the first new single for Rain for 2023 with potentially two more singles to come later in the year.
